Centerfire Deer Rifles For Home Defense
The reason centerfire rifles are listed as a house gun is for power. A centerfire rifle will shoot through any soft body armor the bad guys may be wearing. If your home is being attacked by thugs using a car or truck as a weapon, a centerfire rifle bullet can shoot into an alloy engine block leaving the vehicle disabled.
With a 3x9 scope, bolt action rifles have an effective range past 400 yards!
Stay with popular calibers, so if things go to hell-in-a-handbasket you will be able to find ammo.
What great times we live in. 15 years ago it was almost impossible to buy an accurate deer rifle so cheap. Many of these rifles can shoot one inch groups at 100 yards with quality ammunition! We set the price limit for centerfire bolt and lever action rifles at $450 to keep with the house guns theme.

Marlin 336 Lever Action: $400-450 from a dealer
|
One of the original 30-30 lever action rifles. Even today with so many modern assult rifles, there are still sheriff deputies that carry the 336 Marlin in their cruiser. The lever action rifle handles fast just like a pump shotgun, but you get 4 times the effective range. When it comes to 30-30 rifles, the Marlin 336 is king. Also available in the hard hitting 35 Remington. 6 round tubular magazine and 20 inch barrel.

Remington 770: $320-350 from a dealer
|
This price includes a 3x9 scope already mounted. Available in popular calibers plus the 7mm-08, 7mm Rem mag, and 300 Winchester Magnum. Weighs 8.5lb with scope. I have held one of these and I believe they are just as beefy as the Model 700 series bolt action rifles. The 770 is a lot better than the 710 and 715 models they replaced. The camo stock stainless version is cool.

Rossi Rio Grande 30-30: $380-410 from a dealer
|
I bet there are more real cowboys in Brazil than the good old USA. The 464 is Rossi's real lever action cowboy gun available in 30-30 Winchester, 45 Colt, and 44 Magnum. Of course the 30-30 packs the most punch. Authentic buckhorn sights and a beautiful hardwood or camo finish make the 464 look like the classic. 6 round tubular magazine, 20 inch barrel and 7 pound weight. Also available with octagon barrel. Stainless finish is only $30 more.

Savage Axis: $280-310 from a dealer

Savage changed the Egde model name to the Axis. Look at the cheap price! The Savage Axis cost less than the Stevens 200! I like the strong european style reciever that is so un-Savage like. The Axis is offered in 25-06 Rem, 270 Win, and 30-06 Springfield, 223 Rem, 22-250 Rem, 7mm-08 Rem, and 308 Win. All models have a 22" barrel and a four round detachable box magazine. Stevens Model 200: $320-350 from a dealer
|
The Steven 200 is pretty much a Savage 110 without the AccuTrigger, so you know it is a well tested and reliable gun. The blind magazine holds 4 rounds in standard and 3 in the magnum calibers. The barrel is free floated and the action is pillar bedded into the stock providing excellent accuracy. Available in both short and long actions from 223 Remington through 300 Winchester Magnum. Weighs 6.5 to 6.75 pounds. If you want the AccuTrigger, spend $70 more for the Savage Model 111.

USSG Z98 Zastava: $420-450 from a dealer
|
Well folks, the absolute best rifle on this page is the USSG Z98. It would be a good deal at $695! For $450 it is a steal! Remington imported this rifle for a few years as the Model 798. The writers in the gun magazines were saying the 798 was a step up from the Model 700 and far superior. This is saying a lot, as the Model 700 is a very good rifle! The USSG Zastava Z98 made in Serbia is the most overbuilt Mauser 98 action. Alailable in 30-06 Springfield, 243 Win, 308 Win, 270 Win, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 375 H&H, and 458 Winchester.
